Yellow Star Theme

I think that the theme or lesson in the book Yellow Star is that you should appreciate what you have every day. I think that this is the lesson because in the book the main character, Syvia, is in a family of Jews struggling to stay together and safe during the holocaust. I bet that before anything happened with Hitler and the Germans they would have never thought that their lives would be changed so dramatically. Another thing that it shows is how you should always appreciate what you have because one day it could be taken away like the many lives of the Jews killed in the concentration camps. This book teaches the readers that they should be thankful for what they have and that they don't have to constantly live in fear of their normal daily lives being taken away. It shows how thankful you should be to even be alive.

Yellow Star; Syvia

In my book, Yellow Star, my favorite character that stands out to me is the main character, Syvia. She really stands out to me because she is the one telling her story- survival. She was four years old when the holocaust started. Right now where I am in the book, she is about nine years old. To be honest, the holocaust is taking up a lot of her childhood. She is obviously so brave and patient, which are some of my favorite things about her. She has to be in hiding and can't let anyone see her! That makes me thing of how hard it must be for her! And years and years of going through this! A year is a really long time. I really want to meet Syvia the most because her braveness shows through her character. At one point in the story, she took her first step outside in a VERY long time. It finally wasn't illegal for her to be out, although the German nazis could still capture them and bring them to the concentration camps. This shows how brave she was to go out there and take the risk! And the bravest part was that she not only stole one pear from the tree outside, but she stole two! Without being caught! Another reason why I would like to know Syvia is because she is so generous, especially in times of need. For example, when she stole the pears, she took the extra risk to take two of them- because she thought of her sister! She gave her sister the pear without getting caught by the nazis. Another thing she did was kept her baby cousin, Isaac, company when she could have totally blew him off and worried about her own problems. When she woke up from being passed out for days, the first thing she thought about was how she left her little cousin unattended. She could have been worrying about how she passed out, but it was not the first thing on her mind. She did a lot for others when really, she was the one in need which is so selfless of her.

Katniss Everdeen

My favorite character that I had ever read about would have to be Katniss Everdeen from, The Hunger Games. I think she is my favorite character because first of all, she is so brave. Katniss took her sister's place in competing in the hunger games, where you fight to the death until there is one person left, who wins. Her braveness took over when she went in and fought against the other tributes. Another reason why Katniss is my favorite character is because she is so selfless. She works and cares for everyone but herself. For example, when Prim, her sister, was chosen to be a tribute she took her place. She didn't want Prim to die- she'd rather die herself. Another example s the fact that she fought for her family and friends, to get money for her family to be alive. She fought knowing that it's her family motivating her, and I liked that. Katniss is the greatest character by far!

My favorite book that I have ever read is The Hunger Games because it tells about how bad the world could turn if we keep society the way it is. The Hunger Games is based in the future so it shows how much the world could change. The kind of genre that I like to read is realistic fiction because I can relate to the events that happen to the character and I understand mostly what’s going on in their lives. The book I just finished reading is The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen. The book was about a 16 year old girl named Jessica who lost part of her leg in a tragic accident on the way home from a track race. Jessica struggled to have happy spirits after the accident while she was in the hospital. She found it hard to cope with only having one working leg. For a while, she had a temporary pipe leg from below her knee down. She thought she would never be able to do her favorite thing again- run. As she was considered disabled, she had to be sat in a chair next to another disabled girl who she had never paid any mind to. Her name was Rosa and she was actually a really good friend. Her track team did many fundraisers to save up money for a running prosthetic leg which was $20,000. When Jessica realized how that was only for her running prosthetic leg and not even her normal walking leg, again she had no hope. After a few long months, she got both legs and with a lot of training was able to run again. She had an idea to push her disabled friend in a wheel chair for a race to finally show that people should see the person, not their condition. When she got enough training, she pushed her disabled friend in a wheelchair for 10 miles for a race. It was a great book and a good story.
